The people of Albania achieved independence in 1912, having endured several centuries of Ottoman domination. After the First World War, they lived under a series of dictatorships beginning with that of King Zog. He was followed by Mussolini, and then by Hitler. They were 'liberated' by the Communist partisans at the end of the Second World War, only to be subjected to yet another dictatorship. This was led by Enver Hoxha. During his 30 year 'reign' Albania became even more impenetrable to outside observers than North Korea is today. In this book about Albania, published to celebrate 100 years of Albania's independence, Adam Yamey describes how his almost obsessive interest in the country developed and what he discovered about life inside the country's closely guarded, tightly sealed borders when he managed to visit it in 1984, the last year of Enver Hoxha's life.

Albania is a country with an interesting history and a fascinating present (as it negotiates the turbulent wake of a lengthy and brutal communist regime). Albania on my mind provides useful background, mostly through the eyes of a naïve youngster who engaged the country more or less on a whim but one which became a bit of an obsessive hobby. I enjoyed the read, knowing it was a hobbyist sharing his fascination and not pretending to be authoritative. I read it prior to a two-week holiday in Albania, and am grateful I did.Product details

Inaccuracies abouts dates in the advetisement blurbs prompt me to ask is it the publisher or the author who doesn't know what he's talking about? I am going to avoid this book-- it sounds like a second-hand narrative out of the old periodical "Problems Of Communism", published by the US State Department in the 70s.
More about trivial personal matters than Albania. Disappointing. Boring
I found it "nice " but not good enough. Expected more insight on Albania
This is good book, author share his experience from place and time already gone. Not too many people visited Albania under old regime and thanks to the writer we can see small part of this strange world. Book has no ambition to be scientific study just unique memories. I liked.
Day-to-day for most Albanians prior to Hoxha's death is unimaginable to most Americans and western Europeans. This little book gives a nice snapshot, without taking itself too seriously.
Too short to be considered more than a long article the story gives an interesting ousiders insight into fast dissapearing albanian recent past
I enjoyed your book very much. I couldn't put it down. Your writing style is concise and very focused and your narrative brought back many memories. Although the events were unfortunate in Albania, your descriptions brought a smile to my face. I have lived through that regime and I can relate to all your stories in the book. I am recommending this book to my husband and children.
